SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF GENERAL MARRIAGES
1. Marriage is a relationship between husband and wife.
It is meant to fulfill the social, psychological, biological and religious aims of the society.
2. Marriage is a specific relationship between two individuals’ adult
Man and adult woman and based on mutual rights and obligations. Relationship is enduring on short term or long term.
3. Marriage is a universal social and religious institution. It is found
in almost all societies of the world.
4. Marriage is entirely a two people’s affair, a man and a
woman.
5. Marriage requires social approval. The relationship between marriage partners must have social approval. Without which the marriage is not valid.
6. Marriage produces family. Family helps to provide facilities for the bearing and upbringing of children who will replace their parents later.
7. Marriage creates mutual obligations between husband and wife.
The couples fulfill their mutual obligations on the basis of customs, rules or vows made by them.
8. Marriage is always associated with some civil and religious
ceremony. This social and religious ceremony provides validity to marriage. Though modern marriage performed in courts still requires certain religious or customary practices.
9. Marriage regulates sex relationship according to prescribed
customs and laws. Sex outside marriage is a curse, except on agreement of the partners.
10. Marriage has certain symbols like ring, vermillion, special cloths,
and special signs before the house etc.
11. Healthy marital relationship helps to form a good society.
Offspring’s of such marriages emulate their parents to live peaceful, happy and disciplined lives.
12. Marriage should exist between partners who are capable of
