                               BY REPUTABLE SCHOLARS



Many scholars have attempted to define Marriage.These scholars have put their views thus:
1.  Malinowski “Marriage is a contract for the production and maintenance of children.”
2. Edward Westermark, in his book ‘History of human marriage’ opined that, “Marriage is a relation of one or more men to one or more women which is recognized by customs or law and involves certain rights and duties both in case of parties entering into the union and in the case of children born of it.”
 3. The Encyclopedia Britannica presents marriage thus: “Marriage is a physical, legal and moral union between man and woman in complete community life for the establishment of a family.”
4. Horton and Hunt wrote that “Marriage is the approved social pattern whereby two or more persons establish a family.”
5. Lowie presents that “Marriage is a relatively permanent bond between permissible mates.”
6. To H.M. Johnson, “Marriage is a stable relationship in which a man and a woman are socially permitted without loss of standing in the community to have children.”
7. Hoebel, adds that “The complexes of social norms that define and Control the relations of a mated pair to each other their kinsmen, their offspring and their society at large.
 8. Ahamefule Ekechukwu wrote that “Marriage is the formal union of a man and a woman as husband and wife, the mutual offering of sweethearts to themselves”
 The eight points above expose the conception of writers concerning what marriage is. It is concluded that marriage is both a biological, psychological, cultural and social affair. Marriage is a special type of relationship between permissible mates involving certain rights and obligations.
Lundberg stamps his approval to this when he submitted that “Marriage consists of the rules and regulations which define the rights, duties and privileges of husband and wife with respect to each other.
In addition, any marriage that is not contracted between a man and woman is an aberration of the real intent of marriage. Such marriage involving same-sex is not-God approved and becomes a curse because there are no proceeds coming out of such relationships.

There are points that make a marriage accepted as a real union.      (1) Formation : Normally marriage starts with two persons- a man and a woman, adults, capable of fending for themselves.    Negative Reactions on Procreation against a Healthy Marriage After a long waiting and there is no pregnancy coming up, some partners without faith can resort to secretly raise children outside their marriage without the knowledge of the other partner. This is not the practice in a healthy marriage. In a Healthy Marriage, the partners are open to themselves without prejudice. The commonest reaction outside Healthy Marriage is that if both partners are not medically fit and the man feels that he is down, he can arrange and pay another man to perform his duty to his wife if the partners agree.
